The Initial Set Penetrometer provides initial set and early-age strength estimates on fresh concrete. Typical concrete mixes have an initial set value of approximately 500psi (3.4mPa). After reaching initial set, concrete can no longer be worked or consolidated effectively. The compact instrument is fitted with a 2.25in (57mm) diameter dial gauge for portability and ease of use in lab or field.

The 1/20in² (32.3mm²) plunger is simply inserted into fresh concrete at a constant rate to the scribed mark at 1in (25.4mm). Dual scales of 0-700psi and 0 50kg/cm² indicate resistance. Maximum readings are locked in until released by pushbutton. The instrument can be calibrated using an ordinary weighing scale and adding or removing register plates provided.
